Creating a safe sleep environment is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your little one. Here are the key recommendations every parent should know:
- Room-share, don't bed share. For at least the first 6 months, your newborn should sleep in the same room as you, but on a separate sleep surface such as a crib or bassinet.
- Keep the crib clear. Place your baby to sleep in a crib or bassinet that is completely free of toys, pillows, blankets, or any soft objects.
- Use a firm, flat mattress. Cover it only with a snug, fitted sheet. Look for cribs and sleep surfaces that meet Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards.
- Back to sleep, every sleep. Always place your baby on their back for naps and nighttime sleep to reduce the risk of SIDS.
- Dress for comfort. Choose wearable blankets, sleep sacks, or footed pajamas instead of loose bedding.
- Avoid unsafe surfaces. Babies should never sleep in an adult bed, couch, armchair, or car seat unattended.
